Default Seam repair -- advisability, feasibility and likely cost?

Newbie question: if the seam (piping?) on a convertible's front bench is broken (see the picture below) but there is no rip or tear in the vinyl, would the experts on the board suggest fixing it? If so, suggestions on how to proceed?

My initial reaction is to have a local upholsterer assess it in person. It appears that they could fix that. BTW, the piping is the bead that runs along the edges of the seats (a small tubular edging). This is the stitching.

Thank you for the quick response and for the terminology info. Two more questions:

    1. By "local upholsterer", do you mean one specializing in automotive repairs or any good upholsterer?
    2. Would there be a need to remove the seat to perform the repair?

    Thanks in advance!

I have used a guy in the past that specializes in making boat covers, but he has repaired many seats for me. This one may be able to be left in the car, but don't bank on it.

There has to be someone in your area that does automotive upholstery. Usually it is not someone who ONLY does auto stuff, but will also work on furniture, etc.

Thank you -- if you have someone to recommend in the Mid-Atlantic region, I am all ears!
