Thread: posting pictures

  1. posting pictures

I'm still struggling to upload a picture. I follow the steps outlined and it appears to work. The jpg shows up in my reply but if I post or preview it turns into a paper clip.

I've upgraded to Internet Explorer 8.

I'm trying with a new thread to see if this works.

  2. OK, I'm stumped.

I click the "Manage Attachments" button
    I select Add Files
    I press select files
I pick the picture to upload
    I press upload files
Then I press Insert Attachment or Insert in line.
and everything seems to work perfectly. I see the file, it's size is correct and it has an image icon.

But when I press submit reply, or preview reply the image turns into the dreaded paper clip.

OK I'll give it a shot for ya.

Step 1: After writing your post on "Quick Reply" Click on lower right tab, "Go Advanced"
Step 2: The next screen which will say "Reply to Thread" on top left. Scroll down past the message box and you will see a blue highlighted line stating "Additional Options". Three lines below it there is a tab states, "Manage Attachment" Click on it.
Step 3: It gets a bit confusing at first. To locate your photo in your computer in the box #1 on the far right is a tab, it says
" +Add Files" Click on it. Another box opens on the screen says "Upload Files From Computer"" On the bottom of this small box click on the tab that says "Select Files"
Step 4: A larger box appears regarding your files. Just highlight the photo in your file and hit the tab "select" This box will close with the smaller one showing your file now inside the box.
Step 5: Hit the "Upload Files" tab Now that smaller box closes and in the box left open you will see the file in the section that says "Attachments. Don't worry if there is a large question mark just as long as the file name is under it that matters.
Step 6: Hit the tab "Insert Attachment" Now that boxes closes to the box with your post in it. Now just hit the tab "Submit Reply"

    Thats it.

QUICK NOTE You may have to double click on the tabs. I have to but I am using a MAC computer.

Rick, do you know why the files loaded from John here show that they are here if you are looking to the thread without being signed in to the forum (You can read the title and see the kind of file and also how much data volume it has but not the pic of course) but you donīt see them - only the field "Attachment" which shows that they are here - if you are signed in to the forum ?

My idea of this morning is :
all our attachments - also the old pictures - are still here; only we can not see them !

There must be a possibility to get them all activated. I assume that the producer of the software (vBulletin Solutions, Inc.) could give you an answer to this question, Adam. Perhaps it would be the best to phone with them and to tell them all about the trouble you had with the change (update) of the software and then to ask for help (?).

BTW: If they wouldnīt be able to help, perhaps itīs possible to get back to the former software ?

Hope you will have enough free time for such a phone talk with vBulletin Solutions, Inc.; guess that could clear the siituation.

I installed the "latest" version of vbulletin last night, and it said they fixed a bunch of bugs related to Internet Explorer, and another 250 other bugs. Also, they have another version about to come out again that fixes another bunch of bugs. My frustration at vbulletin is rising. I should've known better than to upgrade when the software came out initially.

So we are forced to wait ... .

On the other hand we can write as we could always before and we can post new photos - mostly that works !
So the problem is not too great and we have the perspective that it will come better more or less soon - not the best but okay.

Thanks for all your effort, Adam !

  13. I think I may have figured out the problem
    Livin' Large.

  14. The problem was the size of the file. It is 97.1 KB which worked fine on the old version of the site but I would guess they've limited the size in the new version.

Adam, what are the limitations for KB and pixels?

No, thatīs not the problem, John ; I loaded some pictures with 2.2 MB ( directly - without rezising them before) and they came up without any problem - the forums software cut them smaller ! And then I loaded some smaller pictures (smaller than the limit of 195 Kb !) and some of them didnīt show up after loading ! I always saw this only in the "Preview"-function, but guess it would have been the same if they would have been posted. Iīm convinced that there is another reason why the software takes some pics and some not, but I have no idea what it could be.

BTW: You can see the limits by clicking on the question mark after opening the Attachment Magager => right upper edge !

    Hi guys
    To add to the confusion
I just have tried to re-upload pictures to an old post ttp://www.buickcenturion.com/forums/showthread.php?1342-Oh-Crap-winter-is-here
I have deleted the old attachment and re-uploaded the same picture twice 1x resized (23.6 KB) and 1x original size (that was 2.2 Mb and is automatically resized by the site to 169.7 KB)
    They are both visible now
I think that is the way to go

Yep, size of the pictures definitely seems to matter!

I have tried to re-upload the original downsized pictures to my thread “A pretty odd car has started to hang around in my garage” several times using different methods, but without result.

This morning (after reading this thread) I tried uploading the full-scale pictures as they once came from the camera with the EXACT same naming as before and let the program downsize them for me (what Rolf talks about) and ta da!

It scales the pictures a bit too big for my 19’ screen, but apart from that it looks just fine!

  18. Adam helped me find the true solution to the problem. The process would fail anytime I tried to load a picture that had been posted on the forum before the upgrade. Adam showed me the place under "Settings" labeled "Attachments" where I could delete these leftovers. Once the broken versions were deleted I had no trouble uploading the pictures again. Attachments that were done prior to the upgrade have are marked "Post: <<N/A>>" so they are easy to spot and kill.

I have reloaded a handful of pictures on some of my posts and they all worked perfectly.

You can't delete these files from the manage attachments screen. You need to go into Settings and then Attachments.

Thanks Adam for all your help in sorting this out.
