I got greyish white smoke out of the engine hole. MY BABY IS BROKEN. AHHHH Anyway, I think its because I put motor oil in the transmission, but it wasn't much of a problem for 3 weeks. I need a recommendation. Please assure me I am not screwed.

Which hole are you talking about? And why did you put engine oil in the transmission? Mistake?

It was an unfortunate rushed mistake. It is coming out of the hole on the left side of the big block. The random hole.

FIRST OFF Couple of question:
When you did this three weeks ago, how much oil did you pour into the trans? 1/2 quart, 1,2,4,or 5 quarts? Very important.
Did you notice this right away and put the proper amount of engine oil into the engine? And did you check your engine oil level (dip stick). If you ran your engine down on engine oil....:Dou: not good at all.
When you noticed your mistake 3 weeks back did you change the tranny fluid and checked your engine oil level. Or did you just leave the engine oil in the trans not checking the engine oil level.
Is it possible you spilled some of the engine oil down the dipstip tube of the transmission (where you poured the engine oil by mistake). It may be the oil burning off your exhaust on the passenger side.
Or ...as I am not a tranny guy, the oil smoke may be coming out of the transmission vent tubes which are located on the passenger side of the car close to where the transmission is bolted to the engine. This may be your problem. If you poured 4-5 quarts into the trans that already had fluid in it then its overfilled and fluid will be exiting the vent tubes with some of it burning off the exhaust.
Either way that tranny fluid must be changed along with the filter.
You mention an engine hole in the side of the engine. Can you see it? Does your engine still run? If it does does it run OK?

Yeah, the engine runs with litle or no problems. But still it vents on the drivers side. The hole is off the big block below the chrome transmission fluid cap (at a 45 degree angle).:xyxthumbs:
However, the transmission seals are now in need of repair. I will go to
http://www.classicbuicks.com/ to buy the new seals, I am afraid that the inside of the transmission will need a complete overhaul. Can someone with knowledge please point out the right things to buy for my 72 buick 455? I miss my baby and I have been taking the bus to get to college and back.:Dou:

I will get the trannie fluid and filter replaced in a jiffy. Thanks my friend.
However, I put approx a whole new thing of fluid into the engine.:Dou:
I know, but I often learn things the hard way and I am used to it. Beyond replacing the trans oil filter and the oil. What should I do? Did you see my post about overhauling the trans? Please assist with your knowledge.

Hi there,
I'm still not clear which hole has the smoke coming out. Is there any way you can take a picture and point it out?
Thanks,
John

the hole to the left of the dipstick
Change the oil, check that you didn't overfill the transmission, make sure the valve cover gasket isn't leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold.

That hole supplies warm air to the original air cleaner to help the engine warm up. It just collects air from around the exhaust manifold.
If you are seeing smoke coming out there it means your exhaust manifolds are smoking. The most likely cause is valve cover leakt that is dripping oil on the manifold where it is burning off.
It's easy to replace the valve cover gasket, you should probably replace both of them. Remove the valve cover and scrape off any old gasket from the cover and engine. Make sure the rail of the valve cover is flat, hammer out any waves or dimples. Put on the new gasket and reinstall the valve cover. You should be careful you don't over tighten the bolts or you'll bend the cover and cause leaks.

Hey, John-Michael, guess it could be more effective for you: print the text you donīt understand and drive to the next GM-station or another car maintenance shop, tell them your problem and ask them all you want to know - especially regarding the printed text - and they will tell you how it works and what has to be done exactly ! Iīm sure that you will learn more doing it this way because they will see your engine and they could show you everything directly at your engine and perhaps they could sell you the needed parts also.
BTW: If you donīt have a Service Manual I would recommend to buy one - thatīs a "must have" !! You could find in detail whatever you are wishing to know; only very special questions will be left over.
