I can't remember if we've talked this out or not, but I need help from you old timers on here... No disrespect intended!! :Brow: If we did discuss this before... please forgive me!
Rear-view mirror for my 72.... the one that is on the car has chrome on the back of it. I purchased one on eBay from a 72 (supposedly) that is black on the back. My current one (that came with the car) has that "smoked" out look. It's not clear and is "foggy" around the edges. The one I bought (black backside) is in much better shape. Perfectly clear.
SOOOOO, which one is correct? I can't find any references in any of the catalogs or manuals I have.
Help!

I've been considering one of the mirrors with the map lights built in. The one from an 80's impala looks like the right shape.
Trying to read anything in the car at night (like a map) is nearly impossible with the under dash lights.
It's amazing what they'll stick in a mirror. On-star, self dimming, compass map lights, expresso machine....
As to what's original it's hard to say. I think they switched to black backs to avoid glare from the back of the mirror bouncing off the windshield. I think they just grabbed the nearest mirror when the cars were being assembled.
Looked at another way no-one can prove your new mirror is incorrect.

A black back mirror is the best for your black car with black tires, Steve!
Itīs the perfect mirror for you - original or not, anyway!

Steve, if I was a bettin' man, then I would bet that the black backed mirror is correct for a 72. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mid-year change, though.
As a matter of fact, here are some photos from the registry:

I'll make the switch in a few weeks when I pull her in for some upgrades... (parade boot, mirror, right side mirror, dash bezels, speedo bezel, under hood insulation, etc.

yes` it was a midyear change , my 72 was built in sept of 71, and the back is stainless as a 71 was, my 73 has a black satin finish. the 72 i had years ago was built in april 72 and was satin black as well.

Hey guys, I bought a really nice replacement speedometer "cover" from Evil-Bay a few months ago. This was weekend, I installed it. Looks nice, but for one thing... It's dirty. Not cloudy, just needs to be cleaned and/or buffed... However, I can't get my hands inside to clean it up as needed. Suggestions? (other than have my 5 yr old daughter do it?? :D )
I see some your pictures and that clear plastic gleams like glass... mine is dull. HELP !!
Plus, I need a left side bezel... I found and replace my right side and it looks sharp. Matches the speedo bezel... now my left side looks crummy!
Anyone want to part with one? Needs to be for a drop top though!

The best way to clean the speedo cover is to remove it, clean and polish and reinstall.
If you look at the back of it you'll see screws that hold it together. If you take these out you can clean all the nooks and crannies and you can give the clear plastic part a little polishing.
I bet you'll go from not bad to spectacular in 20 minutes.

Novus plastic lens polishing liquid. I got mine from a local Harley Davidson dealer. I can also be gotten online.
It comes apart easliy, but you'll need a very short stubby "+" screw driver to losen the two screws from the "ceiling" of it, to take it out of your car.
