Thanks Guys. I love this stuff. And then when guys add in all the memories that accompany the pics, I just get lost in them. I swear I am hooked! Have always loved Buick's and just about any "classic", but these beauties have grabbed me and held me. Coming up on my one year anniversary with my gal. March 16th, 2007 she was delivered during a sleet and snow storm. I could have cried. :bawl:
I might have, but being the manly man I am, I'll never admit it to you all! :beers:
Have loaded the picture that made me fall in love with her... some of you saw this when the car first listed on eBay... I saw this and it was over. I got bitten and smitten at the same time! The second shot is of her on the first day she came out of the garage last year. (March 17th, 2007) The day after the snow and sleet storm... (it had all melted overnight!) And the last shot I took on Feb 1st of this year. It was in the mid 50's and she had cabin fever!! :Brow: Ok, it wasn't for the car, it was for me!
(On another note, I have no idea why the top has that "ripple"... I am sure someone else can lend a thought on this!)

By the way, Keith, you take some great pictures. I'd love to have you shoot my ride something! And Bob, what an amazing house and property you've got there. Very "homey" looking...

Hi again.
Yeah the Centurion bug is flowing through my blood stream. And I got it bad.
I am working on getting some funds together so when the right car comes along I'll be armed and dangerous.
In the meantime I have Centurion screen savers on my computer at work which I'm changing all day. This makes my co-workers crazy.
I have my Centurion calendar and a 1972 sales brochure on my night stand.
I can't find my 1973 brochure. It's stashed somewhere. It has a copy of the build sheet for my 1973 convertible with it. The one I let get away....
I just need to find the right car. I'll know it when I see.

I just attached two more pictures of my '73.
Yes I had a set of Denman wide whites back in '76!

The German
03-06-2008, 12:38 PM
Hey Steve, don't worry; your tires with the raised whites are as good as white walls would be for your car because your car is black in black. It looks a touch more sporty, a little bit more aggressive than with the white walls, but with that black car these tires make a special harmony. The intention of Buick to create a special gentlemens sports car is brought to a peak with those black tires. The car gets the appearance of having more power. Guess if Keith and Phil will look at your last pics, taking some time thinking about they will agree.

On the other hand your car also looks very good with the original whitewalls; perhaps you will change back to them after some years when being older - white walls have more gentlemen appearance ;) and are historical correct :) !

The mansions are about a mile from my house. It's a subdivision with some very strict building codes. They're all custom home lots with a minimum of $800k as a starting price for building a home.

Needless to say, those are NOT in my neighborhood:laugh:

Rick do you have air adjustable load shocks in the rear? You have the most raised rear body from what i can see in all pictures.

Nothing special. I had all coil springs replaced around that time, the fronts did come down a bit since then. As for the rear, I do have air shocks, I keep them at about 10 pounds but when I'm towing I bump them up to 110 pounds and it keeps the rear even with the trailer, and that is even with equalizer bars on the hitch. I do hate them cause if makes the ride a bit stiff when not towing, but I have little choice otherwise the rear will be sagging way to far to keep things safe. Shot below I have previously posted it shows the true ride height of it when towing and loaded up. Tried air bags, they didn't help.

Also I have a slightly oversized tire (taller) then what would go on it, which also make the ride height taller. Did this to make sure the tires do not get overloaded as these tires are designed for heavy loads. Already lived thru one blow out while towing at 70 mph. It can really make you stain your pants in a hurry:shocked:

Thanks, Keith! I have often remarked over the years that, in my view, the Centurions had the most clean, best integrated style of any of the full-size GM cars of the era. The cars are pure, spare, and honest. They really are the logical progression of the late 1960's designs, and were, thankfullly, built before the opera windows, pillared rooflines, landau tops, stand-up hood ornaments, etc. came into vogue. I share your view regarding the protective side molding, and think it's significant that the brochure photos from the era typically showed the cars without that option.

Best of all, these cars look like Buicks. You can see the same sort of sporty, open-wheeled look that characterized the mid-1960's Wildcats, Skylarks, and Rivieras. Even if folks have no idea what a Centurion is, they typically know that the cars are Buicks!

Brian, Your car just once again (in my humble opinion) shows just how stunning these cars are without the body side molding to break up the flowing lines. Your coupe exemptlifies everything that Buick had in mind in styling for the Centurion.not only do they look beautiful without them, the molding was essentially useless, due to the eliptical shape of the upper bodyside. the body stuck out farther then the molding,so when a door opened against the side it hit the body and missed the molding completely. just look at most original cars with the molding, and youll see the nicks are above the molding.

I envision a beautiful blond with hair flowing driving it - could be because I know the original owner was a single woman, she bought it for herself as a 40th birthday gift, she should have caught the attention of a few guys tooling around town in this flashy ride. :laugh:i just let dewbers have it for the old man remark! im thinking julie newmar or elizabeth montgomery, even though wed have to get her out of her 68 camaro rally sport convertible, but i think she might agree to it. the story of the woman buying the 72 for her birthday came right back to me when you mentioned it. the ladybug!!!! what a neat story.

Rolf

Rolf, the car was repainted in original-type lacquer in 1984. The car was originally finished with the black paint stripe, and we took very careful measurements and photo documentation to make sure that the striping artist repainted the stripe exactly as the original. My stripe is slightly above the body line rather than right on the body line, but that's as my car came from the factory. There may have been differences from car-to-car and among assembly plants in the precise location of the striping.

If you look at the photos of Adam's car, you'll notice that its original stripe also runs above the body line rather than right on the body line.

One other item of note. I like the clean look of the Centurion so much that I have for years resisted installing my NOS passenger side rearview mirror. I may do it at some point, but like the uncluttered look without it.

Thanks for your info, Brian. Up to now I was sure that the stipe has to follow close to the body line but it looks really more interesting to me to have it sightly above - especially with that clean look of your car (without the body side moldings) !

Perhaps you are right regarding the mirror; on the other hand the mirror seems not to be such a strong interruption of the side view to me. My feeling is that there is something missing when there is no mirror, but guess thatīs only because Iīm so used to have mirrors at both sides of a car. So itīs a specialty to have such a compromiseless clean right side; I understand you very well !

Anyway, itīs a very original looking car and guess its color may be rare to find in our days too. Enjoy it.:xyxthumbs:

Rolf, regarding the color, it's interesting that Sandpiper Beige (my car's color) was the second most popular color on the '71 Centurion coupes, right after Burnished Cinnamon (the color of Adam's car).

Those colors were very popular in Germany too during the 197oīs; I had a BMW in Burnished Cinnamon or a similar color. But I guess to find one with such a color in our days is very difficult. I havenīt seen one for years now.
Most old German cars were sold to eastern countries after the "iron borders" felt and to Africa; so they are really rare here !

Ok, now my feelings are hurt! This just may be my last post! :bawl:
But before I go... I just want you all to know that I started this thread! ME!
And now you're ripping me?? And to think, from two guys that I used to respect and admire! Despite the fact that one drives a freaking orange peel and the other has to have three Centurions, rather than just one! (Think he's making up for some other "short coming" in his life??)   (Sorry Phil, that just popped into my mind and I couldn't let it go... I tried, but my will power is not that good!!!) :Brow:

Having a lot of fun with this thread guys. And to all you "non-regulars"... where are your pic's and updated avatars? Would love to see some shots of you "phantom" members!! Come on, do it, it's easy!! alright steve ,
calm down, ive spoken to the counsel and we took a vote, the good news is :we will spare you, from being turned into the lawn jockey, the bad news is:at somepoint this month, youll notice something funny about the way the centurion is running,so youll pop the hood only to find......... a 200 cubic inch ford 6 cylinder engine sitting there, oh yeah itll be hooked up to a 2 speed powerglide tranny.with no reverse. so sorry about your bad luck! he, he !!!!:Brow:

I found a few more pictures of the two Centurions I used to own. Pics of the red one show it in my driveway, the first day I owned it in May of 96. You can see a 72 Catalina I had in the back ground too (I love all of the early 70's GM B and C bodies). The other pic of the red car is my son Shaun at 15, driving it to school! Does that show what kind of Dad I am? or that I'm an idiot? It was a one time treat. The brown car is a coupe I bought in August of 98, from the original owner's estate (for $800!). It was such a nice car. Totally original. I found the VIN too, I should register it I guess, but I don't know that it exists anymore. I sold it in 2000 or so.

Randy, those are great photos, so thanks for posting them here!

That '73 coupe looks really nice, reminding me of the first '73 I ever saw. During the fall of '72, I headed out to Huling Bros. Buick of Eugene, Oregon to check out the new '73's. It was late at night and the dealership was closed, but a new Centurion coupe in the solid brown metallic with road wheels was displayed under the lights. What a knockout beauty!

Phil - great reply!! I give. You and Keith are much brighter than I am, so I'll beg mercy. I've never won an argument in 16 yrs of marriage, so why I thought I could go toe to toe with you and Keith is beyond me! :spank:

Randy - GREAT looking cars bud. How did you get the rear end on the red one to sit so high? Air shocks? You actually sold that? Talk about a brain fart!!

Brian / Rolf - my right side mirror is sitting in the box that Rick sent it to me in. I can't decide what to do with it! One day, I want it on... the next day, not so much. Really torn on this. (Classy looking ride Brian!)

Thanks Steve! The red car had heavy duty springs installed by the previous owner. He had the car set up to pull a large boat. I actually traded that car to Keith Bleakney for his 69 Electra. It is the red car you see in some of his pics.

Thanks for sharing all the photos, Randy. You know we enjoy them.

By all means, submit the info you have on the 73 coupe you once owned. Adam has over 100 Centurions that I submitted from documentations in the '70s and '80s and undoubtedly most of those cars are long gone. I still have about 100 more to go to catch up so the idea to capture as many Centurions as we can still goes whether the cars exist or not. We know that they did.

Hey Phil,

The color is Cadillac Black Cherry. It's a deep burgundy that looks black at night.

I'm planning a thread on my car when I get some momentum.

I've promised myself that I'll have it ready and photographed for the 2009 calendar.

One night I suddenly woke up and asked myself;

Does my, not yet delivered, centurion fit my garageopening?

I asked you guys how wide the opening should be to feel comfortable and all said at least 90 inch. I measured my to 80 inch so I had to break the good news to my wife that we needed a new garagedoor.
To my surprise she was all for it? Women are an enigma?!

Anyway, last saturday there were 2 Hungarian fellows installing it and they did a real good job.

My Centurion has arrived to sweden but thereīs some paperwork of course.
Hopefully i have it later this week :user:

Per,

It's stock for a 1996 Mazda 626  I just liked the color and it was a standard easy to get off the parts shelf mix. Being I'm towing and going long distance with it I figured on an easily matched color in case of that forbidden mishap with an other car on the road. Case point is the parade boot was painted 9 years later and it came out to be a perfect match, there was no problem on mixing the paint getting the correct shade.

Over all it was painted in the winter of 1997 and it does show its share of nicks and age. Second time around most likely I'll paint it an original color with an original style top along with a glass rear window instead of a plastic one. My goal is maybe with in the next 5 years I can swing it.

Problem is each winter I plan on doing major work on her (like this past winter I wanted to rechrome the bumpers and headlight bezels) but the racecar GS blew the engine, so that took priority and money to get a new engine back in and running.

Richard, the interior was done about a two years ago. The guy did a great job. The carpet turned out to be the wrong shade, that is on me as I should have pre-bought a replacement one, but I can live with it, I was not particular with it when I gave him the car to do it.

Hey, what a nice car ! It remembers me to the car which I wanted to buy from our former member Keith but couldnīt find a qualified shipper and then had to let it go to another new home. A Centurion of the year 1972, red colored with white roof and interiour still is one of my favourites.
With low miles and the super clean engine your car is one of the rare nearly-new-Centurions of this wourld - congratulations !

Wish you all the best for your further restauration steps and hope to see the final photos of the car probably next year (?) !

thanks, when the paint is clean and polished the sun really puts some fire inside the paint.

Sean at Paintworks did an amazing job on the car. Most paintjobs looks good the week after they're done. Quality work still looks great after years and miles have accumulated.

There are now some nicks in the paint, and one mysterious scratch but not a single bubble or flaw in the paint itself.

It was a strange coincidence but I drove the "Queen Mary" to work yesterday because we are about to have a Nor-Easter here in New England. Snow is in the forecast and it's time for hibernation. I thought one last ride for the fun of it, dry out the exhaust, charge the battery and fill the tank. It was simply fun driving the car, it gives me a thrill each time.

It was fitting that I ran into this thread while taking a break at work.

Now I've got to work on my winter car so I can get the Centurion into the garage.

Sleep well, until next spring. sniff. :bawl:
