Very interesting history, I never knew the true reasons behind the Lawn Jockey. Actually never knew there was any reason behind it. I find the story to be very informative and interesting.

I was looking for one a few years back, and in the north east area forget about finding one. They are considered a racist item along with the Confederate Flag. I did find me a nice flag at a Nascar meet some time ago. I just like the look of it and it does represent history of this country. I don't consider either items as racist.

As for the Lawn Jockey, I saw a few when I attended Buicks at Norwalk back in the late 90's. But of recent times they seemed to have vanished even in that part of the country. It's not on my "must have now" list but when traveling (flee markets & garage sales) I always keep an eye out for one, so far I've seen none for sale. Yours is restored very nicely. It's looks brand new! You did a great job on it!

A friend of mine has a similar thing but that one is made of wood and is holding a plate in front of him. Think its pretty old, his is for indoors use though.

Looks like you have done a good job fixing up yours…
Sounds exciting with those underground railroads, was that during the civil war?

What's it made out of? Cast iron?

Nice work Keith. You've got some real talent bro. Good question John. I always wondered that too. My bet is some sort of "pottery"... And Rick is right... around here, they are considered "racist", which is sad when you hear the real story of why they were used. It was just the opposite! Good lesson learned today. Thanks Keith!

very nice keith, i can remember as a kid , our across the street neighbors had something very similar with blackface as well, remember it feeling like concrete.they had 2 , one on each end of the driveway .we lived in a cul-de-sac with 6houses. sure enough one night someone stole 1 of them.

Nice work, Keith. I painted one of those about 10 years ago, but I just bought some black, white, and red spray paint and did a bomb job on it. Looked ok from 20 feet!

and yes, those concrete ones are HEAVY! I'm sure the cast iron ones are just as bad.
