Hi guys,

I'm ready to deal with the original heater/ventilation blower/fan on my '71 Centurion.

My understanding is that the fans become dirty over time, then become unbalanced, causing the blades to scrape against the sides of the fan housing.

My blower/fan has squawked intermittently for several years, and I chose to ignore it. But I drove the car again last night, and the noise has become unbearable.

I know that these are no fun to access, but it's time to either replace or repair the blower/fan. Can these be cleaned and lubricated successfully? Or should it simply be replaced?

And, if these need to be replaced, does anyone have a source for the correct unit?

Thanks for your help. The car is going into the shop today for a few items, including this one.

Have you tried calling the local auto parts store? I have a feeling these should still be available new. (One would hope, anyway)

You should pull the fan motor and see what's going on. There's a c-clip that holds the squirrel cage fan in place. If that's broken the cage can begin to rattle and rub.

Rodents adore getting into the heating systems and building little nests and piles of acorns or whatever. You may find a mouse house is the source of the noise.

If the bearings in the fan motor are gone you're best bet is to replace it.

Our cars have flow through ventillation which means the fan is on constantly once the engine is warmed up. This indicates that the fan is only making noise at higher speeds. If it's beginning to make noise it could become constant.

Adam and John, thank you both for your replies.

The noise has become pretty constant. Adam, I think you are correct regarding the availability of these units.

I'll let you know what we find when we get into it.
