Hi,
I added A/C to my car and had my mechanic pressure test the system and convert it to R134a. I never had a freon based system for comparison so I can't say how it compares to stock, but it certainly gets cold.

I had a thermometer in the vent reading 34 degrees. That's on MAX Recirculate with the fan set on low. This was on an 80 degree day so I was pretty psyched.

There are posts on some adjustments that can be made to the pressures to "tune" it to R134a but I haven't found any adjustments necessary.

There are kits for changing the system. They generally have a couple of valves, the refrigerant and new oil for the system.

You're supposed to remove as much of the old system oil as possible, fill it with the new oil, change the valves and charge it up.

It can be done at home, but I trust my mechanic for work like this. He has a feel for the systems that comes from experience.
