I can't seem to find a decent photo that shows the trim plate that contains the centurion head and the word "Centurion" (see the graphic at the top of this forum page; this is the piece I'm talking about). My 71 convertible is being restored and the part has been re-chromed but I can't recall if the background to the centurion head is painted (in my case, black) or not. Also, are the recessed areas of the word painted or not? Thanks for any help.

Yes, James. Both the area surrounding the Centurion helmet and the lettering should be painted black.

Given that the piece has been re-chromed, is there a way to prep the relevant areas so that paint will adhere? I've checked the web and it looks like scuffing, and using a self-etching primer before painting is required. The areas are so small I'm not sure that is practical. Are you aware of any standalone paints that might work?

I wouldn't worry about trying to prep the chrome. Just find a good quality spray paint. Rustoleum actually is a very durable paint once it is cured.

There are several methods of painting the depressed areas of the emblem. I've sprayed the whole thing, then wiped the raised areas clean...leaving the black letters. I've also let the paint dry, then polish off the black from the raised areas. You can also use a toothpick or small paintbrush to paint the letters.

OK, I'll give that a shot. I can always clean it off and start over - until the shop is ready to put it on, that is!
