My passenger side sun visor will not stay up. VERY ANNOYING. I replaced the plastic insert at the hinge and rubber part on the other end, but still it drops. I believe the problem is with the steel hinge. The steel pin that rotates within the hinge seems to move too freely. Is there a way to create more friction on the rotating pin or do I need to replace the visor hinge.
Any ideas?

Bruce, when I bought replacement reproduction visors for my convertible, I had the same problem. There is a phillips screw in the repros that I tightened and it helped....but I don't know if originals have the screw. The screw was on the visor itself.

Thanks - There is a screw on the visor that holds the visor to the hinge pin if that is the one you are referring to. What seems to be the problem is the hinge pin may be a bit worn where it rotates within the socket. If there is no way to tighten it, I was thinking of maybe injecting something like silicone to provide some friction.

I see what you mean. I would think Silicone would make it worse, since it is a lubricant. I would try some epoxy glue around where the stud inserts into the metal bracket to keep it from turning inside the socket.

You can use a drinking straw. Gather a bunch of different diameters. If you can't find a good fit take the closest one that is too small and slit it lengthwise. It's better to have a gap than to have something that overlaps itself. Trim the straw so it's roughly a quarter inch shorter than the post.
loosen the screw on your visor until it's about to fall out and remove the visor. Slip the straw part of the way into the visor and slip the straw and visor onto the post. Tighten the screw slowly testing the tension as you go. If the visor doesn't move smoothly you can use a pencil to coat the post in graphite.
If you can't get enough tension you can replace the screw with a fatter one. It threads into a peice of sheet metal or plastic inside the visor. It's easy to strip the threads.
