hey everyone, I have 2 sets of 6x9s, a set of 3.5", 4 6.5" and 4 1" tweeters. And I cannot figure out where to put any of it:Dou:. Im not gonna put it all in my centurion convertible dont worry about that, lol. Just looking for some ideas on where to put stuff. Has anyone ever put and speakers below the rear arm rest? I took it off and there doesnt seem to be any room behind it. any suggestions? pictures would be even better:Brow:

Hi
I have two radio's in my car the original one and a modern one (Sony)that is mounted in the glove box together with a SD card reader that acts like a CD changer the only thing that is visible is the wired remote (Sony Safety Commander)on the side of my steering Coulomb
I have put in a set 2way 4" speakers in the front
I had to mount them a bit lower under the dash because the are to big for the original place under the dash
Then i have mounted an other set in the center of the dash for the original radio
In the rear i have mounted a set of 6x9's 4way speakers on the original place behind the rear bench and that sounds great but only with the top up
So i am also curious where i can put another set of speakers in the rear for a good sound top up or down and still keep an original look

Hi there,
There are lots of places to put speakers in these convertibles. But your choices are limited if you want them not to show.
With the speakers you listed I would suggest the following.
Put the 3.5" speakers in the openings on the sides of the dash. You'll need to special brackets that bolt to the underside of the dash. You can make them or scour the salvage yards.
The 6X9 will fit behind the rear seat. These face backwards. When the roof is down it's louder behind the car than inside. The other option is to mount 2 6.5" speakers in the same spot but facing forward. This would take some creativity.
I am planning to move my 6x9's to the rear armrests. I have a cunning plan to hide them. I'll post pictures if/when the plan comes together.
The 6.5" speakers can be mounted in the kick panels or the rear arm rests but they are very visible there. They are slightly less conspicuous in a black interior but not much.
Mounting them in the doors is difficult to find an open flat spot that will work. If you have power windows you can move the switches and put the speakers there but it's going to require a bunch of cutting.
The 3.5" in the dash and 6x9 in back does not require altering the car. It is the least visible and the easiest option. I suggest you begin with this and explore the other options if the sound is not good enough.
There are a handful of options for the radio. There's another thread on this board that gives links.
I'll be interested to hear what you decide and how it works out.

I would love to put speakers in the front kick panels and also in the rear arm rest. however in both spots it is not deep enough to put speakers in. the rear arm rest there is metel behind the panel, not really wanting to but the metel out. Aslo the front kick panels it appears that it would not be deep enough as well. Any ideas? Also I have a nice sony cd player that was installed in the original spot (yes the dash was cut) dont really like it but it was that way when i got the car. I have also added a 10 disc cd changer in the trunk.

In the metal behind the rear armrest is a hatch that can be unscrewed with 4 self tapping screws so you don't have to cut it
Behind the hatch is the regulator mechanism and the adjusting bolts for the rear window located
So i believe there is enough room to mount a speaker
I just don't want to cut op the vinyl
And mounting a speaker behind the uncut vinyl will sound muffled or does anybody have experience with this set up?

Depth is definetely a problem.
There are thin speakers that might fit. They usually they have neodymium magnets which are much more powerful. These stronger magnets allow them to be mount much shallower.
The metal panel behind the arm rest has lots of space behind it. If you have a friend with a welder a recessed bowl of box could be added to give clearance. You can also leave the panel out, I don't think it's part of the structure, but that's just a guess.
I'm going to try a maxxbass circuit to add some bass to my front speakers. It's an electronic circuit that removes the low notes and then mixes their harmonics back. You percieve lower notes than are being played. It sounds like voodoo but it's been in use since pipe organs.
My plan calls for 5 1/4 inch separates in the dash. the 5 1/4 will be mounted together in the center channel opening (it's rougly 6x11) with the tweeters mounted under the outside openings for separation. If it sounds good I can add a subwoofer to add the low end punch.
I'm still in the design and imagine stage but I think it might work.

hmmmm, I may not please some of you, but I put 5 1/2's under the rear arm rests. They fit just fine, though you'll have to cut the vinyl. (that's the part where some aren't going to like it...) There are speaker holes already there. I just got black face plates and it matches nicely. Very good sound from them. I also have two 5 1/2's under the dash. One on each side. Can't see them, but you can hear them.
Have stock radio in dash and digital cd/radio in the glove box.
Can post pics if wanted...

Can post pics if wanted...
please do post pics, I took those panels out the other day and I did not see any spot for speakers already there, also did you have to cut the metel behind the panel?

I replaced my rear speakers last week. The old ones were trashed. It sounds better but still not good.
It sounds much better behind the car than inside. Having the speakers face the wrong way just doesn't work well. It's a bit better with the trunk shut so the bass can bounce back, but it still sounds terrible.
I'm still going to try the maxxbass on the front speakers to try and improve the sound. I'm mostly doing this because I have the maxxbass and no money for other improvements.
I'm starting to wonder if my headunit is more of a problem than the speakers.
I'm anxiously waiting for reviews of the new secret audio 3. This would fit beautifully in my center console.
I think I have an old kenwood in the basement I picked up. Maybe I'll try that one and see if the sound is any different.
Old Alpine shaft radios have gotten really expensive on eBay.

Both of my Centurions had factory stereos.
And at the time I thought they were hot stuff. :D
Of course I thought I was hot stuff too. LOL!
In fact I was the first person in my crowd that had a car with a stereo.
But now I have a 2009 Nissan Rouge with the 6-CD Bose system.
Now that rocks!
Now a question. I found a website: Classicbuickparts.com.
Has anyone here dealt with them?
It seems they have some things I want.

Hi Rick
I have bought some stuff of them, for instance courtesy light lenses for my convertible
It came nicely packed but it took about three weeks to arrive but that was in Europe of course, i don't know how long it will take in America
At this moment i am awaiting the next package from then
I think that they are OK. and will do business with them in the future
Hope this helps

Thank you, they have the trunk mat and spare tire cover I need and they have stereo speakers. Not to mention weather stripping, power window motors and carpeting.
I could end up spending a lot of money with them.....OUCH!

Hey Remi - sorry for the amount of time this took. No excuse.
I am sorry... Here is the picture I promised.
Ok, it keeps erroring out... :Blasting:
I've tried it a 1/2 dozen times!
Suggestions?
Rick - I've used them as well. Have had zero issues with them and the shipping didn't take too long at all. (I'm in Delaware) Pretty good people.
Enjoy.
Remi - tell me how to load and I will. Otherwise, I can email it to you.
Sorry!
