Hey guys,

I want to add Cruise Control. Now someone offered me a complete setup.

But there are to questions left:

1) How much headache is it to install. The offer includes all parts and the wiring.

2) Is it worth 250 dollars? The car it came from has much rust, also in the engine bay. All the aluminum parts are corroded. Lots of mold in the interior.
That means I have to disassamble all the stuff, clean it and make it work :tonge2:

What do you think? :confused4:

Erik, I was told that it is complete, but it would realy help if you could take some pics.
I would like to see a pic of the instrument bezel, the gear selector, parts in the engine bay (especially brackets on the manifold and how its connected to the carb).
If you think there is anything else thats important to see, please take a pic.
Itīs very kind of you to offer me to take pics. Thanks.

Do you know what else in existing parts has to be changed?
What has to be included to be realy complete?

I think the price seems really high for a set-up that you don't know works or not - these units are questionable for reliability and problems and function on cars that are well kept and on the road. I think one out of a real junker would be a crap shoot and possibly a waste of good money.

Erik, thanks for all the pics. That really helps to imagine how much wor it is.
Thanks, you helped me alot.
Kurtis, itīs true what you say. 250 is a bit high. Especially for something that has to be "rebuilt". How much would you pay for the complete set in the shape I described?

Hi Peter
I forgot to shoot a picture of the bracket on the carb :Dou:
As you can see my carb is not on the engine at this moment i'm working on that in my shed so here is a picture of what it looked like this summer

About using something out of a scrap/parts car i can say only this
Because the cruise control works mechanically you can clean it all up if the gears are not worn and then it should still function but you cant compare it to the modern electronic cruise controls you find on todays cars on maintaining speed
So do you feel confident enough to try this
Mine works but i think I've got vacuum leaks so it doesn't keep my speed constant
To solve this i am putting in all new vacuum lines and hoses, lubricate the speedo cables and clean the controller unit inside and out en hope that it them works as it should be

Peter,

I've tried to cobble together an original used cruise control system for my 73, but finally gave up. After talking with many "hot rod" guys and street car builders, I find most recommend this company:

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=48/prd48.htm

While it won't be original GM parts, it does work well and reliably. Just a thought. When I get ready to install Cruise Control, I'm going with Dakota Digital!

Good Luck
Dennis

I just installed mine off a 73 Riviera and it works great. The factory wiring harness had all of the connections for the cruise control, so its pretty straight forward. Also added a tilt column at the same time.
