Hi guys
Ever sinds i have my Centurion I've bin bitten by the 'original virus'
So i try to get my engine in this case looking as original as i can
When i bought my '73 the smog pump and EGR valve where disconnected
After reading a comment from Rick Martinez to rip out the guts of the smog pump and let it free spin i followed his advice
and cleaned and painted all the stuff
Now i am putting my engine back together i have taken pictures of all my vacuum lines that where on my carb
My question is
Can anyone tell me or draw a scheme on how the smog pump and EGR valve have to be connected (everything will be in place and looks stock but not operating)

thanks

I'll scan the factory manual pages and send them to you tomorrow.

That shows a lot but i also see that i am missing the solenoid assembly on my smog pump
So i can not yet make it look stock and have to keep searching for the missing parts

I'll send the 72 pages tomorrow. I've seen some '73's without the solenoid. I'll try to send them as an attachment next time.

Thanks WDR
I've got a pretty good idea on how i should run those lines now
I've just have to run the vacuum line from the thermo switch to the diverter valve on the smog pump
Make sense because my thermo valve was looped when i bought my car

The smog pump adds a bit of air to the exhaust when the engine is cold. Cold engines run rich and the extra air lowers tailpipe emissions during that time. It takes 1 or 2 horsepower to run (not enough to notice). All of the vacuum tubing and sensor bits mostly tell the system when the engine is warm and the extra air is not needed.

It's ugly and heavy and there's no harm to the engine if you remove it. Just don't expect a performance gain. The weight loss and HP gain are too small to be noticeable.

The system is hooked up to the exhaust and if you just remove the belt the pump could seize up. Just make sure the pump turns easily before you put a belt on it.

@wifewants1to welcome and
Have you looked in the cars for sale section, should be pretty obvious

John
What is the harm to keep the system working
At the moment my system is not operational because my pump was seized up but i have
the taken the inside scoops out so the pump is free spinning and bloked of the air duct in the intake
I like the original look (exept the color scheme)
At the moment it looks operational with al the hoses connected

Maybe in the future i'l buy a new pump and make it work
Can't be bad in my opinion as you said you can't tell the difference in horsepower

I bought the shop manual CD off eBay, but it doesn't seem to have the vacumn diagrams. Any idea which manual the page above came out of ?

There's no harm in running it, functioning or hollowed out. There's actually benefit to running a working system as it lowers emissions without harming performance.

I've been researching these systems because I also feel the tug towards a more stock appearance for the engine.

My post was more about dispelling the myth that getting rid of the smog pump improves performance.

@ Ken
I only have a Haynes repair manual
the only chapter about the emission system is very general and not explicit for our cars
